Personal Commitments

Whether we realize it or not, every day is a commitment to something.

To family, to specific work, to a lifestyle.

As many have saved, our time is our most important finite resource. And our schedule highlights what we deem important.

That is if we think about it. Often there are things our calendars we do, that given a thought or alternative, we would choose something different.

We want to prioritize friends, but we feel the need to prioritize more work instead. Sometimes because it’s necessary (for food and stability.) But sometimes we prioritize the inessentials because we feel like we don’t have a choice or the day to day stresses of life blind us from taking stock of our lives and whether or not it’s how we want to live.

Taking a break and stepping outside of your normal is a great way to slow down and gain perspective on what you want, what you’re doing, and where you are going.

Deciding to change is the first step to change. This is a personal commitment we make with ourselves.

Personal commitments are:

Commitments usually stem from the heart and align with (at least in clear moments) the mind.

  • Deliberate
  • Catalysts for change and personal development
  • Internal but have a great chance of success with outside help (accountability, incentive, constraints, consequences)

What makes you fall in love with the person you fall in love with? So many deep things that words can’t quite describe. But staying in love is a daily act.

Commitments can come from both positive and negative circumstances and feedback. They usually begin from a place of calm and stillness (link to Ryan Holiday)

When you find a passion or dream or stumble upon a calling, you make an internal decision to pursue it with all you’ve got, for as long as it takes.

When you are so fed up with something, your current job, or the way you’ve been living, that you make a pact with yourself to change no matter what it takes.

Commitment is a verb. It starts with a declaration, but because sometimes real with daily action.

Commitments take belief. Believing in yourself, believing that change or a dream is possible is essential to making it happen. Belief is the prerequisite. Without it, there’s no chance, because the minute things get hard, or you fall off the tracks, you derail yourself and give up.

But through belief, anything is possible with the commitment and consistent action to make it possible.

Doing What’s Necessary

Like many of us today, I’ve been having to make a lot of decisions out of necessity. Health, work, community, institutions, goals… everything is changing quickly.

In some ways, this can make you feel small like you’re compromising and giving up a little of who you are because of the realities you face. No, that isn’t precisely true. When we make decisions out of necessity, we aren’t giving ourselves away, we are holding on tightly to expectations and wants. Our expectations take hold of the reins and say “why me?”

We feel compromised because we refuse to give up our expectations of how our lives should look.

But when we let all of that go, we free ourselves up to move forward.

We aren’t suffering, we’re doing what’s necessary. We may not like it, but at least we are making moves that can lead us to better decisions.

There are three main types of decisions available to us. We can make decisions out of

  • Joy
  • Necessity
  • Or Pain

Joyful decisions are always the happiest because we’re doing them because we want to and we find them fulfilling. Accepting our dream college or dream job. Finding your partner. Building a successful business. Working on your health. Spending your money wisely. Anything that brings Joy into the world.

Necessary Decisions can be tough, but they are usually the most rewarding. This is where we take punches but get grow from the experience. They are sometimes even more rewarding that Joyful decisions because they can make us strong and capable when we lean into them and learn to be uncomfortable. Doing what’s necessary feels like a hard day’s work that fun enough feels good and gives you quality nights of sleep. Whereas Joyful decisions are not always appreciated until much later and can be easily taken for granted if we are paying close enough.

Painful decisions are the worst and should be avoided when possible. This is where hard and painful lessons live. This is where we are so stressed we aren’t pausing to think things through. So we end up making a bad decision or a decision that doesn’t align with us. It’s when we are given the choice between A and B, and forget that we don’t have to choose either because we can do C instead. Or D.

The best thing to do about a painful decision is to step away from the immediacy and intensity and find a calm(er) place to figure out how to rework the problem until it becomes a necessary decision instead.

When left with two bad decisions, come up with a better option. And if that doesn’t work choose neither. Especially if both options are trying to coerce you into something you aren’t. And if nothing works then do what’s necessary and keep an eye out for a better opportunity comes along.

Day 1000

I started writing daily out of ambitious desperation. You see, I wanted to write, to be a writer (among other things), but I wasn’t writing. I’d squeeze out a blog post every month or so, and jot down lots of ideas, but I was doing more non-writing than writing. I made the mistake of waiting for inspiration to come, instead of seeking inspiration out through motion.

Before:

I knew something needed to change, but I wasn’t quite sure what that was yet.

Seth Godin was a big inspiration. Somewhere around this time, I was reading his book, Whatcha Gonna Do With That Duck? A compendium of blog posts from his daily blog organized into centralized ideas. It was a thick-baby, coming in at 605 pages. I had read a few other books from Seth and would read his blog every so often. I think what drew me to the book was the fun and silly book cover with rubber duckies and the title. (I’ve always been drawn to ducks and birds, but that’s a story for another day).

It was inspiring to see how a writing practice could add up to something bigger and deeper than its individual parts.

Around the same time, I was also inspired by a couple of people I knew who had challenged themselves to draw every day for a year and make a drumbeat every day for a year.

At this point, I had what you could call an epiphany (aka the obvious thing that keeps smacking you in the face trying to get your attention).

If I were to write every day for, say a hundred days, that would be like writing a one-hundred-page book. Or a full year would be three-hundred and sixty-five pages.

With a daily habit, I could quickly go from being a “wannabe writer” to a “writer”.

This isn’t exactly an original thought. Plenty of people do this in their own craft (whether they have a name for it or not). But it was original to me. Going daily planted the seed for something much greater than myself.

Ideas come from Momentum

When it comes to wanting to do something (wanting to be something) it’s all about momentum. Taking a yoga class once is a fun exercise. Doing yoga every weekday is a practice. One is a pastime, the other is taking you somewhere. Where you are going depends on the habit you are cultivating. But whatever it is, you are going somewhere. That goes for good habits and bad habits. Building momentum comes from being consistent and intentional. Phoning it in is almost like standing still. You have to pour your heart and energy into something in order to make it become something alive and special. Some days, all you have to give is phoning it in. If that’s all you got today, then that’s all you got. But that just means you have to get up the next day and try harder.

One thing I noticed fairly quickly as I had no shortage of ideas, almost as if having a creative outlet gave my mind permission to open myself up to my life and let ideas flow in. I’ve noticed this before when I write songs.

Sometimes the music comes first and then inspires lyrics, other times coming up with lyrics naturally gives way to musical ideas. Regardless, the songs that come are a reflection of what I’m feeling, observing and-or experience at the moment.

Creativity needs an outlet, whatever that is for you. It’s not enough to want to be a dancer or want to be an Entrepreneur. You have to go out and live it. Your creative outlets are like lightning rods to ideas. But if you aren’t in motion ideas come much more slowly (if at all).

Another observation was that a writing idea could come from anywhere. A conversation. A new book. An old book. A walk in the park. Frustration. Anxiety. Anger. Random objects. Writing made me more observant of the world around me. I would have to pick and choose which writing idea I wanted to grab onto for the day.

Creativity is a mixture of conscious and subconscious influences. I can have a writing idea—call it a prompt or a question—in the morning, go about my workday without thinking about it, and have an answer to it by the evening when I sat down to write.

Of course, not every idea will be a masterpiece. But each day gave me the chance to work on my skills and hone my ideas. For every six decent to bad ideas, there was bound to be one good idea worth more than the rest combined.

Mistakes Lessons Learned

Mistake #1 Not Sharing Enough

One thing that took me an embarrassingly long time to do was to write one day in advance. Early on, I would could up with an idea, write, edit, upload, publish, and share all on the same day. This works but takes up a lot of mental space and the work doesn’t come out as nicely as I would like. Probably about a year in I took the initiative and wrote two posts in one day so that I schedule a post to go out in the morning instead of publishing it in the morning. If I were to go back and start over again, I would have done this from the beginning (people are more likely to read your work in the morning than in the evening). Writing the post that would go out the next day also gave each one a little room to breathe. I more time an idea has to stew, the more I could hone the message into a succinct idea.

Now I’m working on writing multiple posts in advance so that I can give each of them more time and attention. I’m still writing and editing every day, I’m just building on top of my craft and experimenting with ways to improve my skills, have better ideas, and provide more impactful and meaningful work.

Mistake #2 Not Leading with Story

Another thing I would do differently (and am working on improving now) is adding more storytelling to my blog posts. Storytelling is one of (if not the) most powerful ways to teach or get a message across to others. When we listen to a story, whether fantasy or reality, we put ourselves into the equation and are much more willing to listen and discover the knowledge and wisdom buried in the tale. A lot of my blogs are just straight up insights or observations. This type of writing has its place, but if you want to make people feel and care about what you have to say, you have to tell it in a way that they will want to listen.

Mistake #3 Dropping the Ball

The last thing I’ll mention is if I could go back and improve things, I would have kept up with my newsletter and podcast. I had a tiny newsletter even before I started daily blogging, but I just couldn’t stay consistent with it. And the same goes for my podcast. My life was in turmoil at the time, and those were the things that I had to give. But I’m kicking myself because they are powerful ways to connect with likeminded people and ways to share what you doing.

I’ve more recently reworked both my podcast and have started a few newsletters. My plan is to double, triple down on both of them.

Streaks are a powerful motivator

I’m not sure what the exact number is—it’s likely different for each of us—but perhaps around thirty days of doing something in a row, you build up a streak that you don’t want to break. Take walking for example. Walk today, and you might not think of anything if you didn’t walk tomorrow. It gets interesting when the day starts adding up. Walk six days in a row and you’ll likely want to walk on day seven. But what about thirty days? Ninety days in a row? A full year? You better believe that when day three-hundred and sixty-six rolls around you’ll do anything and everything to make sure you don’t miss it.

Days add up. Whatever it is you want to do, whatever you want to be good at—make them work for you. It’s not easy, but if you stick to it it’s worthwhile.

Daily blog has been a guiding force in my life for the last year plus years. Just as a daily habit can be your too if you take up the challenge. What better way to prove to yourself that you have ideas worth sharing and that you can help others by sharing your story.

Hitting a thousand days in a row doesn’t make me want to quit—in fact just the opposite. I want to do more, help more, connect more, tell better stories, and challenge myself to make The Renaissance Life something truly special.

Chase Your Interests

Here’s a surefire way to feel unfulfilled and miserable:

Do things you dislike/don’t want because other people tell you too.

I’m not talking about the little things—like taking out the trash or unloading the dishwasher. Little things like this keep us humble. No, I’m talking about the big things, like what school you want to go to, what you want to do for a living, or where you want to live.

Opinions can be helpful, but if they go against what you feel is right, then they’re actually hurtful instead. Making a decision because it’s “the right move”, “the smart thing to do”, “most economical” or “the safe choice” is a terrible thing to base a decision on. Anything we do, no matter how safe it may seem, has the chance to fail. The only thing certain is nothing is certain.

I don’t think it’s a good idea to make decisions out of fear and fear alone. When I’m scared, I’m rarely in a clear and rational headspace, am I’m usually ignoring what I feel as well.

Does this opportunity make me feel joy and excitement? Does this get me jazzed at the possibilities?

If it doesn’t, take some more time to think and journal it over. I’ve learned the hard way that making decisions that’s rational but ultimate against what’s right for me will ultimately come back to haunt me in weird emotional ways.

For example, taking a job for the shear money alone (even though you have no interest in taking it) might solve your immediate needs but strange problems and unlucky circumstances will start popping up. You’re listening to your mind, but you are ignoring your heart.

Emotional / Heart problems manifest in odd ways —

Your immune system won’t be as strong and you randomly start catching colds more often. Or you wake up feeling tired and don’t understand why. Or you wind up spending all of your free time too exhausted to do much of anything besides eat, watch tv and play video games. Nothing is inherently wrong with any of those things. I love watching new enthralling shows (like Dark on Netflix). However, what’s wrong is masking how your feeling—i.e. dissatisfaction with your career or current group of friends—by veggie tailing out and avoiding having to change.

But what happens if you don’t change?

Things won’t stay the same—things will get worse, meaning you’ll feel worse and not know why. You’ll keep digging yourself in a hole of dissatisfaction, listening and valuing everyone but yourself.

Enough is enough.

Chase your interests instead. Don’t compromise on your values. If you end up being wrong, then apologize and change. But better to be wrong than to dislike your life.

Choose Better

I constantly feel pulled by the thousands of ways I should be and should do. The world tells you to be this kind of person, while at the same time telling you to be that kind of person. Oddly enough, both this and that exist simultaneously. 

There are a thousand ways you could create a company, or film, or song, or book. There are a thousand more ways you should dress, live, eat, talk, move, and travel. And 8 billion+ people are living some resemblance of a life out there in the world.

There’s an infinite number of ways you could succeed. Just as there are countless paths you can take in this life. But ultimately, you have to do what works for you.

A thousand ways doesn’t mean a thousand equally beneficial and rewarding options. Some will work better for others—some will work better for you.

That’s the great thing about life—we get to pick and choose what works better for us based on the results we get.

What is anger getting you? Where is creativity driving you? Who do you want to be?

That being said, some universal values tend to succeed no matter what path you take:

Be good (and mean it). Being a decent human being to other human beings, showing that you care about what you do and who you serve will work wonders in your life.

Take responsibility. Own up to your life—good and bad. Don’t ignore what you dislike about yourself. Learn to love yourself, despite your flaws, and challenge yourself to be better.

Lead when the moment arises and follow when the moment arises. Sometimes we just need you to stand up and show us what to do. Other times you’ll need to be humble and follow those who are wiser and more experienced than you.

Work hard. Change when things aren’t working.

And when in doubt—sleep well, eat clean or talk to a friend.

Get Active in Your Own Rescue

I love this quote from Marcus Aurelius:

“Get busy with life’s purpose, toss aside empty hopes, get active in your own rescue—if you care for yourself at all—and do it while you can.”

I read it recently in The Daily Stoic. I love it because it sums of own of my life principles so eloquently. Get active in your own rescue.

There have been quite a few quotes I’ve encountered on my journey that rings with a similar tone:

“Life isn’t about finding yourself. Life is about creating yourself.”George Bernard Shaw

“The most difficult thing is the decision to act, the rest is merely tenacity. The fears are paper tigers. You can do anything you decide to do. You can act to change and control your life; and the procedure, the process is its own reward.”Amelia Earhart

“Some people want it to happen, some wish it would happen, others make it happen.”Michael Jordan

My version pales in comparison, but it’s —

You are Your Own Renaissance.

Meaning, change starts with you. No one wants it more than you. Perhaps you’re dealing with problems, perhaps you dislike habits and things about yourself, perhaps you wish your life was different—well no one is going to make that happen for you.

Waiting for someone to change our lives for us won’t get us anywhere.

As much as I wish someone would do it for me, it’s not going to happen. I’m the one who has to get active and take steps to make the change happen. If with (generous) help, I still must be willing to change and stick to that aim.

It’s not about refusing help, or going it alone—it’s about owning up to your life and the kind of person you want to be.

If you care for yourself at all—then to hell with problems, fears, and circumstances—go out and create yourself and make it happen.

How to Change

You’ve probably heard the phrase you are the average of the five people you spend the most time with” a million times. It’s true, spend any amount of time with new co-workers, groups, or friends and you’ll start picking up their mannerisms, perspectives and habits (for better or worse).

Change can come from anywhere. It can greet you from a stranger on the street, it can hit you like a brick from the turn of a page. But change doesn’t have to be something that happens to you — a chance encounter, a brush with failure. Change can start with you. All you have to do is want it enough (or get fed up enough) to go do it.

Action is what leads to change.

Desire and belief in yourself are massively important to making your move effective and making change stick, but without action, nothing happens.

What kind of person do you want to be, the kind that does what he/she says, or only wishes she/he would?

Change at Any Moment

Transformations occur all the time, everywhere. We can change in an instant, and also gradually. Usually, we’re experiencing both.

The question is: does transformation ever stop?

Where does a hurricane start? When we can see it from a satellite swirling below? Or when cold air molecules get blasted with warm evaporated water molecules?

What is money? is it a mule and three bushels of grain? Is it a Roman aureus coin? Is it SUPREME clothing? is it a collective human idea? is it 1’s and 0’s on a computer somewhere?

Who are we? Our likes? dislikes? Our personality? Our soul? Our job?

Things are continuously moving. We live in continuous cycles and forces, which mostly we aren’t aware of. History rhymes, as they say. For all we know, we’re experience things right now that have already happened in the past. Or maybe everything right now is completely new.

What ultimately matters is what are we doing to do? How do you want to change? If everything is constantly changing, so can we.

If you could change something about yourself (or your life) instant, what would you change? Do it. Why not? Maybe you don’t like where you are. It’s okay. I’ve been there many times too. The ending is just the beginning. Accept where you are, find a way forward. Change starts with you.

If you could change something gradually over the next year, what would it be?

Do that too. Use time as your ally. Spend five minutes a day on it. Go up to twenty minutes if you can make room for it. There’s no sense in waiting for change to come — it’s already here.

Labels give us power.

We label ourselves with our work, our hobbies, our brands.

But what do you do when other people label things for you? What do you do when you find yourself in a place where your life is labeled by other peoples hopes and dreams?

You decide to change.

Life Principle #24: Decide and Commit to Who You Want to Be

Decisions are the foundations of making change happen. 

What areas in your life are you seeking change?

When you want to create a change, something new and exciting, you first have to make a decision. Decide on the change, commit to I­t­ 100%, will I­t­ into existence.

Life can either happen to you, or you can choose what you want your life to be. Again, a decision.

Choose Creativity.
Choose Freedom.
Choose Differences.

Decide who you want to be, then go make I­t­ happen.

See Change as Good — Life Principle #20

You don’t realize how quickly time moves until its already passed. 

When I was in high school (and middle school) I had a really tight-knit group of friends. We were into making music, movies, jokes, making funny short videos, and being your typical, well-rounded goofballs.

I’ll never forget a video that one of the guys (Jonathan) stitched together from us jamming out and having a helluva good time. He set it to the song, I’ve Got Friends by the Manchester Orchestra. It’s like he intuitively knew our time in high school as a group was about to close, and we would be moving on to college and would never see each other as much as we did, every day, waking up at 6 am and hanging out at and around school.

I don’t remember the details, but I do remember the feeling it gave me, (and gives me every time I play that song)

I miss those moments we had and think about fondly on them.

Life Principle #20: See Change As Good

If you’re not changing, you’re not growing, and if you’re not growing your stuck in place.

Happiness and meaning are fluid — they happen on the journey, not the destination (put that on a poster and smoke it).

Change is good. Its the conduit that takes us from sad times to happy times (and sometimes vice versa). Change can lead to unknown adventures and wild places. It’s hard we were stepping away from something or people we love to follow a calling or jump into a new way of living, but you always have those collective memories. I always have those times with my friends goofing off in my room at my parent’s house (I’m tearing up thinking about it). No one can take that from you. (Another reason why health is vitally important too. A healthy mind is a more capable collector of memories)

I think we fear change for the same reason that we can love change: Because it breaks our status quo and leads to unknown, potentially exciting places.

The best part about change is we can make it. We have the power to change our minds, opinions, the direction in your life and more at ANY MOMENT. Usually, it takes a failure or painful experience to see that, but the power to change is always within our reach. Even small actions can lead to big change eventually.

Often times, you’ll face situations or setbacks you don’t want to be in. This is where change is not only good but can become your best friend. When you’re feeling stuck or have hit rock bottom, burnt yourself, or pulling your hair out because you’re at your wit’s end, it’s time to make some change. 

Change starts with you. Be the change you want to see in your life and in the world. Break the status quo.
And when change happens, be good with the new possibilities.
