“I refuse to join any club that would have me as a member.” — Groucho Marx
I’m still trying to get used to this new way of communicating and making friends post-COVID world. Well—that’s not exactly right. It’s not like the internet hasn’t been around for longer than I’ve been alive. The difference is the current necessity to meet virtually versus in-person.
How do we replicate that natural and authentic environment of hanging out in person?
Today we’ve got spaces like Clubhouse, Discord, Twitch, TikTok, DM’s, not to mention the thousand hats of Zoom. Personally, I feel a bit overwhelmed by the variety of options we have available to communicate—at work and in our free time.
These new flavors of interaction aren’t going to go away—even after we’ve all been vaccinated.
It helps to focus less on the medium and more on the communication.
How well you can communicate, connect, tell stories, and be personal matters much more than how / where you do it. (Although it helps to see each platform you enjoy as a constructive constraint on how you want communicate.)
We are humans—teachers, learners, seekers, creators, enthusiasts—looking for belonging and a life shared with other humans.
