“You build on failure. You use it as a stepping stone. Close the door on the past. You don’t try to forget the mistakes, but you don’t dwell on it. You don’t let it have any of your energy, or any of your time, or any of your space.” — Johnny Cash
What are you letting take your energy?
Being happy isn’t about getting everything you want in life, it’s having the freedom and flexibility to pursue what you want in life. Whether that’s work, family, music, art.. is up to you. Anything that hinders your pursuit can either help improve your pursuit or restrict you from it.
We need to be able to know when something needs to be removed or when something needs to be accepted as a challenge:
Is this holding me down, or is this a challenge I can work to my advantage?
Suppressing your art because of fear or because of what others say is taking your energy from who you really want to be. A restriction.
Losing a contest, desiring your art to be better, discouraged by other super talented artists, or lack of time, lack of resources, lack of energy are all challenges you can spin to your advantage if you can think of creative ways to get around them.
