"We don't stop playing because we grow old. We grow old because we stop playing." ~ George Bernard Shaw ~
- Happy Birthday!
- To the Young
- To the Old
- And to Those Like Me
- If not now, when?
My Birthday was this past week (24 on the 24th) and I don't normally think too much about my age, but lately I've been getting into the habit of being more present (living in the Now). With that in mind, I thought I would take the time to pause and reflect.
I've come to the realization that when it comes to learning, acquiring new skills, doing new things, pursuing excellence and everything that comes with striving for a RenaissanceLife, Age is not an issue.Age is not an issue.
I don't care if your 14 or if your 78; You are never too young or too old to pursue your passions, dreams, and go after the life that you want.
Now you might be thinking something like, "But josh, you just don't get it. Your 24, your in your prime [priiiiiime]. I'll be turning x (60) and my mind is just not the same as it once was. You'll understand, and feel the same way when your my age..."
Maybe so, maybe when I hit Fift'd I'll just stop learning, stop wanting to learn. And in a way, you're right. I am just 24. I've barely even experienced the world. And I've only just started discovering who I am. But to me, getting old just sounds like an excuse. It doesn't matter how old you are. As long as you continue to care, you will live like your Ageless. We need to care.
Caring is the essence of Joy, and living your life with Joy brings a child like wonder, a sparkle in your eye. A spring in your step. If we care about ourselves, the world, and others around us, each new day will be like Christmas morning."Age is an issue of mind over matter, if you don't mind, it doesn't matter."
- Mark Twain -
Yes our bodies and minds grow older, and we may not be able to do everything we used to. But if we take care of our bodies, eat the right food (the majority of the time), get some good exercise and sunlight, we can feel wonderful and strong.
Our minds are Malleable (Neuroplasicity). The brain has the ability to change and adapt as a result of experience, changes in behavior, environment, thinking and emotions. So as long as we continue to learn and challenge our minds we will stay healthy and strong.
Of course we might get thrown a curve ball. An injury, like a pain in the neck, or something worse. At the very least we can still enjoy the life that we have right now.
To the young,
I want to say, never stop yourself from doing something, learning something new, building, and creating because you think "but I'm just a kid, what can I do?" or someone else telling you something similar.
"I think I was very naive early on, but that also meant I didn't know what couldn't be done."

"If you can dream it you can do it."
~ Walt Disney ~
"The earlier you start, the more time you have to mess up."
~ Emil Motycka ~ emils lawns
To the old, I want to say,
don't make the opposite excuse as the young by saying "I'm too old to do ...x" You have the capacity to achieve whatever you want to achieve. You can be 90 years old and still run a marathon. Amazing! Our brains can literally change. Your still breathing, that means your still living. And your still moving, that means you can still take action.
"You are never too old to set another goal or to dream a new dream..."
~ C.S. Lewis ~
"You can't help getting older, but you don't have to get old".
~ George Burns ~
"Aging is not lost youth but a new stage of opportunity and strength."
~ Betty Friedan ~
And to those that are close to my age, and as a reminder to myself (listen up me), We need to remember to Live, and to grow into the person that we want to be. We need to explore and see the world. We need to find out who we are, what our purpose will be, and how we want to be remembered. So Start something new and exciting. Learning something you've always wanted to learn. Go somewhere you've dreamed about. It just takes one small step, and snowballs from there.
Sidenote Pro tip: I highly recommend starting a blog or a journal. Writing is a good way to track your progress and look back on where you were at a particular time. I also believe that writing is a window into your mind and soul. (I write, so that I can understand how I think, and how to think).
"Life isn't about finding yourself. Life is about creating yourself."

"Knowing yourself is the beginning of all wisdom."
~ Aristotle ~
"I want you to show them the difference between what they think you are and what you can be."
~ Ernest J. Gaines ~
Let me ask you this, if we're "too young" to achieve and make a difference in our lives and the lives of others, and we're "too old" to achieve and make a difference, when do you think the time will be right for us to do it? Are we just going to fit a live-time of dreams and desires into our 30s and retire from everything after that? No. The right time is NOW, at your current age. Your life is your own. Your ability to act and learn is limitless. So start that business. Take some acting lessons. Learn how to sing. Hack your way to the top. And become Ageless.
Reminder: Lets become Ageless. To h-e-doublehockeysticks with our age and the idea that we are too young or too old to achieve and pursue excellence. Age doesn't matter as long as we continue to care. Let us act, learn, and hustle until our last breath.
